Cursor targets cost-efficient software development amid $50 billion valuation talks.

Key Takeaways

  • Cursor launches Composer 2, a coding-only AI model trained exclusively on software development data.
  • The smaller, specialized model is designed to cut operational costs compared to rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.
  • Cursor now claims over 1 million daily users and $2 billion in annualized revenue.

Can a small, coding-only AI model outperform generalist rivals on the tasks developers actually need?

The San Francisco-based AI coding startup announced plans on March 19 to release Composer 2, a new AI model designed exclusively for software development. According to company officials, the model offers a more efficient alternative to offerings from Anthropic and OpenAI.

Cursor Costs vs Competitors

Composer 2 is designed to function as an AI agent that carries out lengthy coding tasks on a user's behalf. The company trained the model solely on coding-related data, resulting in a smaller model that Cursor says will be less expensive to operate.

The platform currently claims to have more than 1 million daily users and 50,000 business customers, including Stripe Inc. and Figma Inc. Earlier this month, Bloomberg News reported that the company entered talks to raise financing at a roughly $50 billion valuation.

From Writing Code to Running

AI agents are revamping the software development lifecycle by enabling autonomous workflows and opening programming to non-technical users through vibe coding.

Modern platforms enable developers to build multi-agent workflows working across the full software lifecycle, from design through deployment and maintenance. Organizations integrating AI agents into workflows report faster response times, reduced manual errors and improved productivity.

Vibe coding allows anyone to create applications with conversational prompts, making it ideal for rapid prototyping rather than production systems requiring long-term maintainability.

How Cursor Went From Startup to $29 Billion Giant in 12 Months

Cursor closed 2025 with aggressive expansion across acquisitions, funding and product development.

  • In July 2025, Cursor completed an acqui-hire of enterprise CRM startup Koala.
  • In November 2025, the company brought a $2.3 billion Series D round led by Coatue, valuing Cursor at $29.3 billion.
  • In December 2025, the company signed a definitive agreement to acquire Graphite, a code review platform used by hundreds of thousands of engineers.

By February 2026, Bloomberg reported annualized revenue had doubled to $2 billion.

Cursor also launched several platform enhancements throughout fall 2025, including Composer in late October and Cloud Agents for dispatching background agents from Slack, Linear or GitHub.
