SAN FRANCISCO — The generative AI pioneer OpenAI is rolling out a ChatGPT interface to help users with writing and coding.
OpenAI's canvas is a separate window in ChatGPT to allow a user to "collaborate" with the chatbot on writing and coding projects, according to the company today.
Canvas is in beta and intended to help a user "go beyond simple chat" and create and refine ideas "side by side" with ChatGPT.
Canvas is designed to support project that require editing and revisions by better understanding the context of what a user is trying to accomplish.
Users can highlight specific sections for ChatGPT to focus on, and the chatbot can give inline feedback and suggestions "with the entire project in mind."
Canvas also features a menu of shortcuts for a user to ask ChatGPT to perform various actions on their project:
Writing shortcuts
- Suggest edits
- Adjust the length
- Change reading level
- Add final polish
- Add emojis
Coding shortcuts
- Review code
- Add logs
- Add comments
- Fix bugs
- Port to a language
Canvas was built with GPT-4o and can be selected in the model picker while in beta.
Starting today, OpenAI is rolling out canvas to ChatGPT Plus and Team users globally. Enterprise and Edu users will get access next week.
The company plans to make canvas available to all ChatGPT Free users when it’s out of beta.
