CHICAGO — The international law firm Reed Smith hired a leader to develop its various AI disciplines to help deliver services to clients.
Reed Smith named Richard Robbins its first director of applied AI, according to the firm this month.
Robbins is responsible for leading the firm's generative AI, predictive AI and data science areas. He's part of a team assembled by Reed Smith's Chief Innovation Officer David Cunningham.
Most recently, Robbins was the managing director of applied AI at the legal services provider Epiq.
“Rich adds both a client’s perspective and technical experience to the work we aspire to accomplish," Cunningham said. "He has partner-level experience and still gets excited about neural networks.”

Robbins will lead a team of AI engineers and data scientists and work closely with the firm’s design and tech transformation resources within its Innovation Lab, strategic client intelligence and financial intelligence teams and Gravity Stack subsidiary.
Previously, Robbins served as Morningstar's general counsel, a senior consultant at Fireman & Company, focusing on law firm data strategy, and established the knowledge management department at a law firm.
He holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and an M.S. in data science from UC Berkeley.
