Google Purchasing Nuclear Energy For AI From Kairos Power

What is the nuclear agreement's scope?

MOUNTAIN VIEW and ALAMEDA, Calif. — Google is buying nuclear power to help support its data centers and AI technologies.

Google and Kairos Power signed a plant development agreement to bring online several planned nuclear power plants by 2035 that should add 500 MW of electricity to U.S. power grids, according to Kairos Power yesterday.

Under the agreement, Kairos Power will develop, construct and operate a series of single advanced reactor plants, and it will sell energy and services to Google under power purchase agreements.

The nuclear plants will be located to supply electricity to Google data centers, with the first deployment by 2030.

Google plans for the nuclear power deal to help it reach its carbon-free energy and net-zero goals by adding to its use of renewable energy, such as solar and wind.

The "landmark" agreement will accelerate Google's "transition to clean energy,” and it is a key part of its efforts to "commercialize and scale" advanced energy technologies, said Michael Terrell, senior director of energy and climate, Google.

Mike Laufer, co-founder and CEO of Kairos Power, said the agreement will enable the power company to "quickly advance down the learning curve as we drive toward cost and schedule certainty for our commercial product.”
