What else can AI developers do with the API?

SAN FRANCISCO — The generative AI pioneer OpenAI is rolling out several upgrades to its API for AI developers.

OpenAI announced the API enhancements today on its DevDay, an invite-only event for developers, in San Francisco, London and Singapore.

The day is intended to bring developers together to "explore new tools and exchange ideas."

Three million developers build with OpenAI's API, the company reports.

The OpenAI API supports development with its range of AI foundation models, from its latest o1 "reasoning" model to GPT-3.5. The company also supports other models and specialized use cases with its family of APIs.

These are the key API upgrades:

Real-Time API

  • Build fast speech-to-speech experiences into their applications

Vision Fine-Tuning

  • Fine-tune GPT-4o with images and text to improve vision capabilities

Distillation

  • Fine-tune a cost-efficient model with the outputs of a large frontier model

Prompt Caching

  • Receive automatic discounts on inputs the model has recently seen
