OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent can book flights, build slide decks, browse websites and complete complex tasks — all on its own. Here’s how it works and who can use it.

OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT agent, an automated tool designed to perform complex, multi-step tasks on behalf of users by interacting with websites, running code and navigating workflows using its own virtual computer.

The release combines natural language interaction with agentic task execution.

What Is ChatGPT Agent?

ChatGPT agent integrates the strengths of prior tools, OpenAI's Operator and deep research into a single, unified model. It is equipped with a suite of tools, including a graphical visual browser, text browser, terminal access and API connectors.

The system is designed to work iteratively and collaboratively, maintaining task context and switching between reasoning and execution modes as needed. The release of ChatGPT agent, according to Gartner VP analyst Chirag Dekate, signals a major step forward in enterprise AI.

"The evolution of AI systems from passive responders to proactive, goal-oriented agents represents a fundamental shift in how work is delegated to digital systems," he says. "AI agents like this will eventually become the default interface for how we interact with digital environments."

What Can ChatGPT Agent Do?

What's most exciting about ChatGPT agent is its ability to complete complex tasks autonomously, without the need for human input. ChatGPT agent can plan meetings, analyze documents, browse the web for specific content, interact with secure websites and even create deliverables like slide decks or spreadsheets.

For example, users can ask the AI agent to brief them on upcoming client meetings using recent news, plan meals and buy ingredients or compare competitors and prepare a presentation. Or you could have ChatGPT agent monitor social media sites (liked LinkedIn or X) for certain terms or hashtags and notify you via email when that term is used.

In the video below, ChatGPT agent is tasked with finding and booking a flight with specific requirements in mind: seat requirements, desired arrival time, plane amenities and more.

Dekate noted that OpenAI is setting the stage for agent-based AI to take over more dynamic and composite tasks. "The system is designed not only to synthesize information but to act upon it. That capability to both think and do is what makes these agents transformational."

ChatGPT agent works through a combination of deep reasoning and active task execution. It can shift between tools depending on the context — choosing the visual browser for UI-based navigation or the terminal for code-level manipulation. When needed, users can take over control of the browser or stop tasks mid-process.

"The collaborative mode of interaction ensures the human remains in the loop," Dekate explained.

When Is ChatGPT Agent Available?

ChatGPT agent is currently available to Pro, Plus and Team plan users. OpenAI is also planning to roll out the AI agent to Enterprise and Education users. Pro users have access to 400 messages per month, while other paid users get 40 messages monthly.

The feature can be activated through the Tools drop-down menu, where users can select "Agent Mode."

How to access ChatGPT agent from the chat home screen

According to OpenAI, they are still working on enabling access to ChatGPT agent for the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

ChatGPT agent represents a consolidation of OpenAI's existing toolsets into a coherent, task-driven assistant that bridges the gap between conversation and action, noted Dekate, adding that while current capabilities are still evolving, the long-term implications are significant.

"These kinds of AI agents will not only enhance productivity, it will also redefine how organizations think about workflow, decision-making and the delegation of complex tasks to digital systems."

How Much Does ChatGPT Agent Cost?

There is currently no standalone pricing for ChatGPT agent. Instead, the feature is included as part of OpenAI's existing subscription tiers:

  • ChatGPT Plus — $20/month
  • ChatGPT Pro — $200/month
  • ChatGPT Team — $25 per user/month (when billed annually)
  • ChatGPT Enterprise — Pricing dependent on organization size and needs

Pro users have access to 400 messages per month, while other paid users get 40 messages monthly. However, additional usage can be added via credits.

Note: ChatGPT agent is not available to those using the free version of ChatGPT.

What Privacy Features Does ChatGPT Agent Offer?

ChatGPT agent includes privacy safeguards such as browser session control, cookie management and a secure browser takeover mode. According to OpenAI, no passwords or sensitive user inputs are stored during agent interactions.

Learning Opportunities

High-risk actions will trigger a "watch mode," which will require active supervision rather than letting the agent proceed autonomously.

For those working in highly regulated industries — such as healthcare or the financial field — that require the ability to audit tasks, ChatGPT agent does not currently provide detailed audit logs in a way that's distinguishable from user actions, meaning you can't retroactively trace exact steps except by watching live sessions.
