Research points to a number of unexpected HR and recruiting wins that AI can deliver.

As society embraces the digital revolution, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds the potential to create unprecedented opportunities. According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Future of Jobs Report 2023, the increased adoption of new technologies is expected to bring job growth in more than half of companies. In this context, organizations are facing a tremendous opportunity to prioritize their people and equip them with the skills needed to succeed in new roles forged by technological leaps.

The shift caused by technological advancement is not merely on the horizon – it is already transforming work, presenting opportunities for improvement. BSI’s recent Trust in AI Poll, which surveyed more than 10,000 adults across nine countries, including the U.S., reveals that 62% of respondents expect their industry to adopt AI by 2030. In addition, 38% of people polled shared they already incorporate AI in their jobs.

AI has the potential to be a force for good by enhancing the recruitment process, creating new skill demands or paving the way for a human-centric approach to redefining the workplace experience. Here are three cases in which AI could be transformative in the world of work.

An AI-Enhanced Recruitment Process Can Improve Diversity

AI has already emerged as a valuable tool in recruitment, enabling organizations to identify strong candidates and reduce human biases common in hiring processes more easily. This is only the start. In the long term, AI could help organizations to build a diverse workforce, with the potential to lead to meaningful innovations and attract stronger talent to strengthen resilience. According to the UN Global Compact CEO report, more than half (56%) of CEOs are now prioritizing workforce diversity to enhance their company’s resilience – and AI-based recruitment can help them achieve this goal by efficiently, fairly and accurately screening resumes and shortlisting candidates.

Moreover, AI can also be used in leadership selection. Research conducted at the Fisher College of Business has shown that machine learning surpasses human-selected boards in identifying effective leaders at the director level. This research highlights the potential for AI to break traditional talent pipeline patterns and instead identify leaders with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

AI Can Support the Acquisition of New Skills by Employees

AI technology has the potential to relieve employees from repetitive tasks, thus allowing them to focus on critical thinking, creativity and empathy – skills that technology cannot replicate. One industry where this is evident is the call center sector – 58% of people polled by BSI interact with automated chatbots. However, as experts note, chatbots can only manage simple queries, and more complex questions still need human assistance. This means customer service responsibilities now require higher levels of empathy and psychosocial support to tackle challenges beyond AI’s capability.

To acquire and develop these skills, people require proper guidance and support throughout their careers — investing only in technology is not enough. The global survey conducted by BSI showed that 53% of participants would trust AI to assist in some parts of their job if they had the right training to manage it. Equipping people with a better understanding of AI can enable them to successfully apply it to their work and favor the development of skills needed in an AI-powered world.

AI Has Potential to Redefine the Workplace Experience

When integrated with a human-centric approach, AI stands to become a force for good, allowing a shift of focus to traits it cannot replicate. This shift holds potential, particularly in people management roles, as poor management globally can incur significant costs – after all, research suggests people do not quit their jobs; they quit their managers. The opportunity arises to create a new managerial model that focuses on creating environments where teams can perform at their best and providing learning opportunities in areas such as empathy, critical thinking and creativity.

Looking to the future, AI also has the potential to redefine work hours by helping us work smarter, without reducing overall productivity. Trials in the UK demonstrate consistent positive impacts, maintaining or increasing productivity while enhancing worker satisfaction and well-being. By addressing workloads, AI could allow a much wider working population to access these benefits – in fact, 18% of people polled globally by BSI expressed interest in a four-day workweek.

What’s Next

The rise of AI in the workplace represents a momentous opportunity for societal progress. By prioritizing a human-centric approach, fostering skill development and reimagining the workplace experience, leaders will have the opportunity to foster a working environment that benefits everyone – even leading to future business success.

Learning Opportunities

However, it is crucial that employees still receive the support and guidance necessary to adapt to the changes brought about by AI. As the BSI survey shows, more than half of the working class (55%) agrees that young people need to be trained for an AI-powered world. With the right approach, leaders can ensure their organizations are fully prepared to reap the benefits of the AI-powered future of work.
