Perplexity's new Market Research agent automates competitive analysis. Here's what it does and who gets access.

Key Takeaways

  • Perplexity launched its Market Research agent on March 20, exclusive to Pro and Max subscribers.
  • CB Insights, PitchBook and Statista integration sets it apart from standard AI search tools.
  • Active lawsuits from Amazon, Dow Jones and the New York Post threaten to slow the company’s momentum.

Perplexity is piloting a dedicated Market Research section — powered by Perplexity Computer, its agentic multi-model system — to automate the kind of competitive and strategic analysis that analysts typically assemble by hand across multiple subscription databases.

The feature launched in testing on March 20, 2026, and is currently available to Pro and Max subscribers.

Inside the Tool

The Market Research section runs on Perplexity Computer, which breaks complex research objectives into coordinated subtasks rather than returning standard search results.

The tool is organized around four workflow categories:

  • Macro Analysis: TAM sizing and market opportunity assessment
  • Industry & Company Analysis: Competitive landscape and company evaluation
  • Strategic Frameworks: Business model canvas, value chain analysis, jobs-to-be-done and BCG matrix outputs
  • Growth Analysis: Tech adoption curves and business model development tools

All four draw on CB Insights, PitchBook and Statista — premium data providers integrated at Perplexity's Ask 2026 developer conference earlier in March.

How It Fits Perplexity's Broader Push

The Market Research section is the latest addition to a growing lineup of specialized verticals that includes Finance, Travel and Shopping. But it marks a meaningful step up in complexity — routing queries through an orchestration layer rather than surfacing simple search results.

It also arrives at a moment of accelerating enterprise interest in agentic AI.

Agent piloting among organizations nearly doubled to 65% between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025, and Gartner projects that 33% of enterprise software will include agentic AI by 2028.

Perplexity is moving early into a category that analysts expect to become standard infrastructure.

Where Perplexity Stands

The company has grown rapidly since its 2022 founding, raising $1.5 billion total and reaching a $20 billion valuation after a $200 million round in September 2025. Annual recurring revenue was approaching $200 million as of that same period.

Its product expansion has been aggressive. Perplexity launched Comet — an AI-native browser — in July 2025, introduced a Search API in September that same year and unveiled Perplexity Computer in February 2026. Whether the Market Research feature will extend beyond Pro and Max tiers remains unclear.

The company is also navigating legal headwinds. A federal judge granted Amazon an injunction blocking Comet from accessing its platform on March 10, 2026. Dow Jones and the New York Post are separately pursuing Perplexity over content usage claims.
